At an unexpected joint music session with Limp Bizkit, the late Eddie Van Halen forgot some musical equipment. After the band’s lead singer, Fred Durst, didn’t answer his phone, he took matters into his own hands. He appeared in a tank in front of his home.
One of the more bizarre stories in the history of rock and roll is the fans of the deceased Eddie Van Halen can be relived in a photobook Eruption in the Canyon: 212 Days & Nights With the Genius of Eddie Van Halen, which was released last October on the second anniversary of the death of the legendary guitarist. In 2001 after leaving Wes Borlandmembers of the band Limp Bizkit were frantically looking for a new guitarist, but for a short time they forgot about it, because they were presented with an opportunity that many bands can only dream of – a collaboration with the iconic Van Halen.
Nu-metal singer, Fred Durst allegedly met the late guitarist at a party, where one of the band’s producers at the time mentioned the possibility of collaboration. At the time, Durst grabbed the idea with both hands and said: “That would be really funny, the best guitarist of all time playing with the worst band.” Van Halen just shrugged and agreed.
The collaboration really happened, only a short time after the meeting, the guitarist played with a group in Beverly Hills, where Durst lived at the time. Van Halen regretted the collaboration rather quickly, later saying that he did “felt like a kindergarten academic.” On top of that, the music is said to be quickly replaced by marijuana smoking. Not impressed, the guitarist left Beverly Hills, forgetting some of his equipment in his haste at Durst’s. The next day, Van Halen tried to call Durst to come get his stuff, but he didn’t answer his calls. He waited another day before deciding to take matters into his own hands.
“Where the hell are my things?”
The author of the book Eruption in the Canyon: 212 Days & Nights With the Genius of Eddie Van Halen, Andrew Bennett, wrote about the event: “Eddie bought a combat vehicle at a military auction with an automatic weapons mount, which is illegal. He drove that vehicle across Los Angeles to Beverly Hills and parked it in front of Durst’s home with the engine running. He got out shirtless, with his hair in a ponytail, dressed in jeans held up by rope and army boots taped together. He held a gun in his hand.”
When Durst opened the door, the Van Halen guitarist put a firearm to Durst’s forehead and asked: “where the hell are my things?” The singer just silently turned around and started yelling at his employees to give Van Halen his gear back.
