At the end of 2022, there were slightly more than 935,344 working people in Slovenia, of which almost 505,000 commuted to work in another municipality. Ljubljana is the most burdened by labor migration in both directions.

Almost 141,300 persons from other municipalities come to work in Ljubljana daily or at different time intervals, while at the same time around 24,200 of its working residents leave for work in other municipalities, according to the Statistical Office. The municipalities of Maribor, Celje, Kranj and Domžale followed in terms of the largest number of persons in both streams of labor migration.

On the other hand, we have these distinctly working municipalities, where statisticians classify those in which the number of jobs is at least 16 percent higher than the number of working residents, i.e. they have a surplus of jobs. At the end of the previous year, there were 17 such municipalities, and for the first time Rogaška Slatina was among them, which in the previous year was among the moderately active municipalities.

In Trzin, there are 3.5 times as many jobs as there are working people

Among these municipalities, the municipality of Trzin particularly stood out, having 3.5 times as many jobs as the number of working people residing in this municipality. Around 5,500 people from other municipalities came to work in Trzin daily or at different time intervals, while at the same time, around 1,300 working residents left this municipality for work in other municipalities.

The municipality of Trzin is the third smallest municipality, but in terms of the surplus of jobs it is well ahead of the others. The municipalities of Šempeter – Vrtojba, Nazarje, Ljubljana and Murska Sobota also had an approximately double surplus of jobs in relation to the number of employed persons residing in this municipality.

T. i. clearly residential municipalities are those in which the share of jobs is more than 36 percent less than the number of working residents, i.e. they have a job deficit. At the end of 2022, there were 31 such municipalities.

Interregional labor migrants around 202,700

Labor migration between individual statistical regions is less numerous than labor migration between municipalities, as statistical regions cover a larger territorial area. At the end of the previous year, there were around 202,700 interregional labor migrants or 22.1 percent of the working population.

Among the regions, Osrednjeslovenska was the only one in the last six years that had more jobs than the working population. Prior to that, the last time there was a surplus of jobs was in the coastal-karst statistical region, namely in 2016. After that year, however, the labor migration index fell the most intensively in this region.

At the end of the previous year, more than 12,800 foreign cross-border labor migrants were working in Slovenia, which was 2.5 times as many as the year before. Most of them were from neighboring Croatia, and the statistical office notes that Slovenia is not yet as interesting as a destination country for Italians and Austrians to work in, although their number has also increased.
