More than half of the international tourists arriving in El Salvador in the first four months of this year did so by air, according to the latest report from the El Salvador Tourism Authority (Corsatull).

The company said more than 1 million international visitors arrived in the country between January and April. Of these, 55% entered the country by air and 45% by land, the latter mainly due to the arrival of hikers from Guatemala and Honduras, with 22% and 16% of the visitors’ origins, respectively.

Meanwhile, 43% of international tourists were from the United States. That means 8 out of 10 tourists who entered the country were American, Guatemalan or Honduran.

According to the Corsatur report, this million international visitors represent a 25% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

The arrival of these tourists will bring in just over $1.113 billion to the Salvadoran economy, according to Corsatur. The agency reports spending about $182 a day per tourist, with stays of two to three weeks.
