Vesolje med nami, director Rahela Jagrič Pirc’s full-length feature debut, was also included in the official Cinedu Teens program at the Cinedu children’s and youth film festival in Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Slovakia.
The film will be shown on Sunday, followed by two more repetitions. The screening will also be attended by the director, who will prepare a workshop for young viewers at the festival, the Slovenian Film Festival announced. center (SFC).
The directorial debut is a youth drama about growing up, set in the small town of Kostanjevica on the Krka river. The story is about 14-year-old Canadian Tobi, who travels with his mother Kristina to visit his grandmother Gizela in Slovenia for the summer vacation. Kristina had not been to her hometown for several years, but now she came suddenly and with great news about the exhibition she was supposed to prepare in a local gallery.
Tobi is not thrilled with the idea of spending the holidays in a foreign land, without his friends and father. His bad temper escalates when he first encounters the racial prejudice of the local children. The only bright spot for him is Tjaša, who is very attractive to him with her adventurous nature. Their association leads him to an unusual meeting with the blind astronomer Herman, who, like Tobi, is a “village outcast”, as described on SFC– yeah.
Herman opens the door of a forgotten observatory to Tobi, where, with the help of his extensive knowledge of astronomy, he gives him life lessons that originate in space and relate to life on Earth. “The star observatory also becomes a refuge for Tobi, where he flees upon the new realization that his parents are having problems in their marriage and that Kristina’s previously planned exhibition was actually an excuse to escape from Canada. V in a web of intense emotions and dynamic events, both Tobi and Kristina have to face burning relationships, repressed fears and the local society, which looks at them as if they are from another planet.” they wrote down.
