Werewolf at Night: Marvel’s First Foray into TV Special and Classic Horror

Marvel’s first TV special, Werewolf by Night, is clearly an experiment by House of Ideas in several ways, building on the exploration already underway by WandaVision and the Multiverse of Madness.

With decades of history behind it, the world of supernatural occultism is very vast. Doctor Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, All the characters already in theaters are probably the most important indicator.

werewolf of the night by comparison, lesser-known, so his announcement was definitely a surprise to those who didn’t know that Marvel had spent two decades trying to make a movie of the character.

The special number released this Thursday is not Origin, but “Battle Royale“,”slasher‘ and suspense, introducing the three main protagonists because we can’t forget that this continues to exist in the world of superheroes that subvert some features of these genres. Jack Russell (Gael Garcia Bernal), Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), Munsing.

With a color palette limited to mostly black and white, the hour-long special is an homage to classic horror movies.even look The furry-looking werewolf is clearly inspired by a practical, old-school werewolf, rather than relying on the increasingly prevalent CGI to make him look gigantic as in the comics. .

Whether or not this decision will be accepted by old and new fans remains to be seen. It offers some of the more heartfelt moments. This is still Marvel’s work.

Among them, the director Michael Giacchino Conscious use of details. Quiet gestures, sounds that create suspense and rhythm, light and shadow that make the most of monochrome works.

Everything has dark humor and Marvel-style lighting that clearly separates the two acts in the story.

Perhaps one of her main weaknesses is Elsa Bloodstone. Her actress doesn’t flinch, but among her three main characters, it’s her who grows more as she sees her worldview challenged, but so does her character…Jessica I’m Jones.

Aside from their different backgrounds as supernatural hunters rather than private detectives, their British accents, and the fact that they’ve never been seen with alcohol in their hands, the two feel very similar. Elsa’s original hair color (between red and light brown) was not maintained as if to discriminate a little more, nor did she use her signature shotgun.

In fact, she shows up unarmed to an event where she should have at least brought nail clippers.

So beyond the fact that we obviously know that MCU adaptations don’t always stay true to the original material, the issue here is rather one of identity. A character that has lost its peculiarities to the point of being too similar to another already known character.

Other than that, Werewolf by Night is a treat on its own and you don’t need to keep up with other projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at all. Not at all, because it’s not even clear in what larger context the stories they tell us are taking place.

Oh, in case you want to know: No, there is no post-credits scene.
