King Charles III. named his youngest brother Duke of Edinburgh. This title formerly belonged to their late father and Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip.

Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Edward received the title of Duke of Edinburgh on his 59th birthday. The new Duke is the youngest of the four children of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II. Edward’s wife thus became the Duchess of Edinburgh, and their 15-year-old son James will inherit his father’s previous title – Earl of Wessex.

Prince Philip became the Duke of Edinburgh when he married – then Princess – Elizabeth in 1947, a title he held until his death last year aged 99. It was precisely the prince’s wish that his youngest son succeed to the dukedom after both he and the queen die.

Buckingham Palace said the new Duke and Duchess will strive to honor the legacy of the late Prince, who established the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards in 1956 – a popular youth activity programme. They added that they will try to help young people have the opportunity to develop all the potential they have.
