Among the favorites is the film Everything Everywhere at Once with eleven nominations

The American Academy has been awarding the Oscars for the 95th time. The Oscars for actor and actress in a supporting role went to Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan, both for Everything Everywhere at Once. The most Oscars, four, has nothing new in the West. Is this a Best Picture prediction?

Jimmy Kimmel, who – in the style of Maverick – descended on the stage with a parachute, sprinkled a few cute jokes at the expense of the participants in his opening speech. (“You all look gorgeous. Looking around this room, I wonder: Could Ozempic be of use to me?”) Among other things, he stumbled over the absence of James Cameron and Tom Cruise, the financial collapse of Babylon and the set of nominees: “A great year for diversity. We have nominees from all five…ends of Dublin.”

After about ten minutes of the show, Kimmel also broached the topic of slapping, which shocked the audience last year: “If someone decides to attack someone on stage this year, we’re going to give them the Oscar for Best Actor and let them give a 19-minute speech.”

In a slight departure from tradition, the evening began with the awarding of the Oscar for the best animated feature film: The Rock and Emily Blunt presented the Oscar to stop-motion animation Guillermo del Toro’s pin (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio). “Animation is not a genre, animation is a film – we’re ready to step up to the next level and be part of the conversation,” the Mexican filmmaker reminded the Academy in his thanks (his next project will also be an animated feature film).

Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan: The first two Oscars for acting are also the first two Oscars for Everything everywhere at onceLast year’s laureates Troy Kotsur and Ariana de Bose presented the first of the “big” awards of the evening: for actress and actor in a supporting role – and both traveled to the same team.

According to all expectations and predictions, he became the best supporting actor Ke Huy Quanfor a role in the chaotic comedyi Everything everywhere at once. (He didn’t just act in the film, he was also a stunt coordinator.) Quan, who became the first Asian actor to win an Oscar, admitted that he almost gave up on his dreams several times along the way, and tearfully added: “My journey started on a boat, I spent a year in a refugee camp, and now I’m here. They say things like this only happen in movies – I can’t believe it’s happening to me. This is the real American dream!”

64 years old Jamie Lee Curtis scored her first Oscar nomination in the same category as her mother, Janet Leigh (who was nominated for her supporting role in Psyche) – but Jamie also crowned the nomination with an Oscar. “It seems that I stand alone on the stage, but in reality I am more than a hundred people,” she emphasized, and thanked many collaborators on the film.

Winning in the West in four consecutive categories is nothing new – the first inkling of the final outcome?A British man won the Oscar for best photography James Friendwhich is a German war drama Nothing new in the West wrapped in cool shades of gray and blue and retaining a similar first-person perspective as Erich Maria Remarque in the film’s literary proposal.

It was this film (directed by Edward Berger and produced by Netflix) that also became the best international film: Germany thus surpassed Argentina, Belgium, Poland and Ireland, which were also nominated this year. This is the first Oscar for Germany in the international drama category The lives of others (2006) and fourth in history.

Right after that is the movie Nothing new in the West also brought an Oscar to scenographer Christian M. Goldbeck and Volker Bertelmann, who composed the anachronistic musical background for the film.

Oscar for criticizing Putin’s RussiaIn the documentary category, which is often a reflection of the historical moment and the social climate, the Russian-Urayan conflict is reflected: the best feature-length documentary became a political film Navalny directed by Daniel Roher. The director also spoke to the wife of the portrayer, the champion of the Russian opposition Alexei Navalny, Yulia: “My husband is in prison only because he spoke the truth, because he defended democracy. Alexei, I dream of the day when you will be free and our homeland will be free.”

Kimmel: “Categories that further extend this show are…”It became the best short feature film An Irish Goodbye directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross Whit, and Best Short Documentary The Elephant Whisperers, signed by Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga. The film received the Oscar for short animation A boy, a mole, a fox and a horse; Charlie Mackesy and Matthew Freud created it based on the suggestion of Mackesy’s educational story of the same name, which was published in a Slovenian translation.

First black two-time Oscar winner: Ruth CarterFor the best make-up and hairstyles, the mask trio who participated in the drama was awarded Whale: Adrien Morot, Judy Chin and Anne Marie Bradley. Their Oscar is most likely a tribute to the creation of the character of Charlie, the morbidly obese protagonist of the story, portrayed by Brendan Fraser.

For the Afrofuturistic costume design of the Marvel spectacle Black Panther 2, she was awarded – to a standing ovation Ruth Carter. In her speech, she recommended herself to the late Chadwick Boseman, among others, saying that he should take care of her mother, who died a few days ago at the age of 102. When Ruth Carter won the Oscar in this category in 2019 (for the first Black Panther), became the first black costume designer to win an Oscar – and is now the first black two-time Oscar winner.

Jimmy Kimmel, who was not to be missed for the first hour of the awards, then walked across the stage accompanied by the donkey Jenny, the “actress” from the drama Souls of the island – he explained that tonight she is an “emotional support” animal if anyone needs a hug or comfort.

The avatar is visually unsurpassedDirector Elizabeth Banks (in the company of a “bear on coke”) presented the first and so far only Oscar to the team of the sci-fi spectacle Avatar. The effects masters thanked the (absent) James Cameron, “whose fingerprint is on every frame of this film”. The first part of Avatar was also awarded in the same category in 2009.

Who has the most nominations?Among the favorites is the movie Everything everywhere at once with eleven nominations. Two Irish black comedies follow Souls of the island and a film about the First World War Nothing new in the west with nine nominations each, including for the international Oscar. The biographical film boasts eight nominations Elvis. The personal family drama has seven nominations Steven Spielberg The Fabelmans.

Ahead of the awards this year, Andrea Riseborough’s nomination for best actress in the little-known drama To Leslie caused a stir. Because he’s white, black Danielle Deadwyler (Till) and Viola Davis (Woman King) were not nominated, criticism of racism resurfaced, but the Academy found that there were no errors in the process for her nomination, so Riseborough was able to retain her nomination.

According to the German news agency DPA, Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh are considered to be the main contenders for the golden statuette for best actress, while for men, either Austin Butler or Brendan Fraser are said to have the best chance of giving a thank-you speech upon receiving the prestigious golden statuette.

According to experts, the German Nothing New in the West has the best chance of actually receiving this Oscar among all German films so far. In contrast to last year’s event, when some individual awards were pre-recorded, this year the awards in all categories will be announced live, and Popikona will also perform Rihannawho wrote the song for the movie Black Panther (Lift Me Up).

This year they also tried to protect themselves from incidents like last year when an American player Will Smith hit a comedian on stage Chris Rock because of his joke about Smith’s wife Jade Pinkett. The organizers have established a special crisis team. Smith will not be at the Dolby Theater this time, having earned a 10-year ban from the ceremony following the incident.
