Police in Bulgaria investigating an international network of art smugglers have come across a previously unknown painting by the American modern classic Jackson Pollock, authorities there have confirmed.
The work could be worth up to 50 million euros, according to experts’ estimates summarized by the Bulgarian National Radio. Several people, including Bulgarian citizens, were arrested in the international operation, the state news agency BTA reported. Reports are yet to provide a description of the image or any other details regarding it.
Jackson Pollock was a leading figure in the Abstract Expressionism movement of the 1940s and 1950s. He was known for his technique of blending, dripping and oozing paint onto large canvases, creating energetic patterns. Pollock was married to painter Lee Krasner and died in a car accident in 1956.
