Irish actor Ray Stevenson, who played the villain in the RRR epic, the Asgardian warrior in the Thor franchise and the 13th Legion soldier in the HBO series Rome, has died. He was 58 years old.
Ray Stevenson died Sunday, his publicist told the media, and the cause of death has not yet been released.
Stevenson was born in Lisburn in 1964. After studying at the Old Vic Theater School in Bristol, he made a living by appearing on British television, and underwent a cinematic baptism of fire in the Paul Greengrass feature film, The Theory of Flight (1998). In 2004, he portrayed one of the Knights of the Round Table in To King Arthur directed by Antoine Fuqua, and later the title role in the Marvel adaptation Punisher: War Zone.
In addition to the role in the first three films about To Thorwhere he portrayed Volstagg, he also reached a wider audience with the trilogy Splitted and with the shareholders GI Joe: Retaliation and The Transporter: Refueled.
On the small screen, Stevenson was Titus Pullo in the bloody HBO hit Rome, which she brought closer to the American audience. He was also Blackbeard in the TV series Black Sails and captain Jack Swinburne in the German series Das Boot.
As a voice actor, Stevenson was the entire work of the Star Wars: The Series universe Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars was Gar Saxon, and he should also appear in the announced live-action series from the Star Wars universe, Ahsoka.
He mentioned his acting role models in an interview in 2020 “guys like Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman”. “They never had a bad role, and within those parameters they were brave and fearless. I was never about the young, attractive protagonist – I could only identify with the men.”
