“Our theater is a place that truly belongs to all of us and where different generations of audiences meet and different views coexist,” said Danilo Rošker, director of SNG Maribor, at the recent presentation of the repertoire.
They live together with us “tolerance, solidarity, a culture of dialogue and a wide variety of poetics and aesthetics in the fields of music, dance and dramatic art,” added Rošker, who on September 1 begins a new, fifth term at the head of the largest theater company in Slovenia – the Slovenian National Theater (SNG) Maribor with a repertoire of Drama, Opera and Ballet.

His assistants remain the same as in the current term, namely Aleksandar Popovski as artistic director of Drama, Simon Krečič in the Opera and Edward Clugh in Ballet. “I am proud that with the artistic directors of the Drama, Opera and Ballet we managed to prepare a program that is current, provocative, interesting, aesthetically perfect, critical and at the same time sensitive and understanding of many social issues,” said Rošker.
As announced by the theater, Drama SNG Maribor will prepare seven premiere performances.
“The task of the theater is to tell and show stories in a modern way, because the artist with his transcendentalism works on the same level of consciousness as the creators of myths,” pointed out the artistic director Popovski.
Theater “between private and public, war and peace, freedom and subjugation”
According to him, they will be in the repertoire “genre of picturesque stories that touch on love, belonging, blindness, disappointments, jealousies and deceptions in mutual relationships, the divine or the genius in man, covering a wide range of a wide variety of emotional states, born in extreme situations and specific atmospheres between private and public, war and peace, freedom and subjugation”.

Five premiere performances at the Opera
Opera SNG Maribor will prepare five premiere performances. The four concerts of the Symphonic Cycle will be accompanied by traditional musical events, such as the Christmas concert of the opera choir, the Christmas and New Year’s concert of the symphony orchestra with opera soloists and the chamber music cycle Carpe artem produced by the Amadeus Chamber Music Society. They are also announcing the Opera Night, which will end the theater season tonight in the City Park.
Ballet in the spirit of philosophical drama
SNG Maribor Ballet will present a dance performance by Edward Clug in November Faust based on Goethe’s philosophical drama of the same name in co-production with Cankarjev dom Ljubljana.
“The popular ballet Zorba the Greek by Mikis Theodorakis returns to the big Maribor stage in a completely new guise in April 2024. With the refreshed choreography by Lorca Massino, we expect a repertoire gain for ballet dancers of new generations, who will certainly impress with the fresh élan of dance virtuosity and expressiveness.” said the artistic director of the Ballet.
