US actress Bijou Phillips has filed for divorce from the TV series star less than two weeks after Danny Masterson was jailed for two counts of rape Oh, that seventies. According to documents obtained by American media, the 43-year-old blamed “irreconcilable differences” for the end of her 12-year marriage.
The couple, who started dating in 2004 and married in Ireland seven years later, have a nine-year-old daughter together, and the divorce petition seeks full legal and physical custody of her. “Her priority remains their child,” emphasized her lawyer Peter Lauzon, who confirmed the divorce filing, adding that Masterson, 47, has always stood by his wife through difficult times and is said to be a wonderful father. “She hopes everyone respects her family’s privacy during these difficult times,” he added.
The documents also show a request for spousal support, while Phillips seeks to “ending the court’s ability to award support” to Masterson and requests that their assets be divided as separate assets, the BBC reports.
She cried several times in court
The actor was convicted after three women testified that he sexually assaulted them in his Hollywood home between 2001 and 2003, practically at the height of his television fame. Prosecutors argued that Masterson invoked his status as a prominent Scientologist to evade responsibility.
The actress stood by her husband during his lengthy trials. A retrial in May found Masterson guilty after the first jury failed to reach a verdict in 2022. The star was found guilty in two cases and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving thirty years. After the conviction, the court assessed that the actor was a risk of escape, so he was immediately taken to prison. Masterson was first accused of rape in 2017 at the height of the #MeToo movement.
In a letter to the judge before his Sept. 7 sentencing, Phillips described Masterson as “the partner who saved her life“, and added that “it breaks my daughter’s and my heart because he is not home with usAfter the sentencing, some in the court saw her crying, and her husband blew her a kiss as he left. The actor’s lawyers requested a retrial, but the court rejected the proposal.
