A project of the Local Government Restructuring Special Law, which the government has submitted to the Legislative Assembly, maintains the validity of the Residents’ Single Identity Card (Dui).

The initiative includes scaling back the transition of 262 municipalities into districts, consolidating them into 44 municipalities while preserving the country’s 14 prefectures. The proposal was presented to the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday by Interior Minister Juan Carlos VideguĂ©n, who assured that the document would not be amended.

“They won’t have to change their dui either. This is the fifth very important point. The current municipality where he lives will not disappear, it will only be renamed to a district with the same name, so the same dui He will be able to do all the formalities,” Bidegain said during the bill’s presentation.

Article 10 of the bill, like passports and driver’s licenses, stipulates the validity of documents as follows:

“The validity of this decree does not invalidate a citizen’s unique identity card, personal passport, driver’s license, or other legally issued document of a Salvadoran or foreigner. , the terms and obligations agreed upon by the municipalities transitioning to school districts remain in effect, and it should be noted that once the law is approved and published in the Gazette, the municipal restructuring “will take effect from the next city council election.” According to Article 12 of the project, March 3, 2024.”

The Legislative Assembly’s Political Committee this Wednesday began considering proposals to cut local governments.
