Murray’s remarkable return in the night marathon, the second seed Ruud also said goodbye

Nadal will recover for six to eight weeks

At the Australian Open, second seed Casper Ruud was eliminated after first seed Rafael Nadal. The finalist of the last Grand Slam in New York was eliminated by American Jenson Brooksby 6:3, 7:5, 6:7 and 6:2. Novak Djokovic was also in trouble.

Djokovic is against the French qualifier Enzo Couacaud smoothly won the first set with 6:1, but at the end of the second he recovered his hamstring injury. The limping Djokovic lost the set in extended play 7:5. Despite the movement problems, Djokovic won the next two sets 6:2, 6:0. The 27-year-old Couacaud is the 191st player in the ATP rankings. He has yet to beat a top 70 player in his career.

The Serb will face an old friend in the third round Grigor Dimitrov, but his fans are concerned as the injury drags on for more than ten days and the nine-time Australian Open is clearly not 100 per cent fit. Now the injury to his left leg, which was bandaged throughout the tournament, has worsened and his movement is far from ideal.

There was a lot going on tonight, as there always is in night games. The atmosphere was tense, which has both good and bad sides. The opponent fought hard, we both had good times and bad times, we both struggled, took medical breaks. There were also some other things I’d rather not talk about,” said the fourth seed.

After 21 years, the first seed was eliminated before the third round

Brooksby, ranked 39 in the world, beat Ruud after four hours. The 22-year-old could have won as early as the third set, but Ruud, who also took a medical break after the second set, saved three closing balls.

After 21 years, it happened that the first two seeds were eliminated before the third round. The last time this happened was in Melbourne in 2002. The eighth seed also had to say goodbye Taylor Fritzwho was beaten in five sets by an Australian Alexei Popyrinso there is not a single player from the top twenty in the last quarter of the draw.

I’m dreaming, I don’t want to wake up. I love this feeling and I want more. This win will be motivation for the future, I have worked hard so far, and now I will work even harder,” said the world’s 113th player in tears in front of enthusiastic fans, who equaled his best achievement in Grand Slam tournaments by reaching the third round.

Kokkinakis served exceptionally well at the start of the match. He won the first set with a break in the fifth game, and the second set in an extended game with 7:4. In the third set, Murray lost the opening shot in the sixth game and the Australian already led 5-2. He served for the win in the ninth game, but failed. The Scot forced an extended game and won it 7:5.

Murray got a violent rush. In the sixth game of the fourth set, he broke the serve of Kokkinakis and tied the score at 2:2 in sets. At 3:00 a.m. local time, the deciding set began. Kokkinakis still managed to save himself in the seventh game after falling behind with 0/40. He saved four break opportunities and took the lead 4:3. Murray was reliably getting games on his serve and in the eleventh game he cashed in on his fourth break chance. In the 12th game, he finished the match with a strong backhand.

It’s amazing that I managed to turn it around. After going 0-2 down in sets, I started playing better. I fought till the end. I love this tournament and I wanted to stay in the tournament in every way. I am completely exhausted, but I feel a special inner satisfaction. I find it hard to believe that so many people stayed at the stadium, since it is after four in the morning,” said Murray, who defeated 13th-seeded Matteo Berrettini 10-6 in the opening round on Tuesday in extended fifth-set play after five hours.

Five Americans advanced

The fourth day of the tournament in Melbourne was successful for the Americans, with the exception of Fritz, as in addition to Brooksby, they also qualified for the third round Tommy Paul, JJ Wolf, Michael Mmoh and a 20-year-old Ben Shelton, who is on his first trip outside the US. He eliminated Nicolas Jarry in three sets. Mmoh, the 107th player in the world, defeated the 12th seed 6:7, 6:4, 6:3, 6:2 Alexandra Zverevawho after the injury is only a pale shadow of the former player.

Nadal will recover for six to eight weeks

Nadal, who barely finished his match against Mackenzie McDonald on Wednesday, learned that he is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks with a hip injury. Thus, he will have to miss the tournament in Dubai, and he is also questionable for the masters in Indian Wells and Miami. The Spaniard is in danger of dropping out of the top ten for the first time in 19 years.
