The wind prevented the 6th stage of the Paris-Nice race

In the Race from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Adriatic Sea, the fifth, royal stage was scheduled, which was won by Primož Roglič in the finish sprint. The sixth stage of the Paris-Nice race was canceled due to strong winds.

The greater part of the stage of the 5th stage of the Race from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Adriatic Sea between Morro d’Or and Sassotetto took place in the hunt for the escapees, who were nevertheless swallowed up by the main body 31 km before the finish line.

At the head of the main body, the INEOS grenadiers, Movistar, and Bora-Hansgrohe riders kept up the pace, while the Jumbo-Visma team, which was protecting Roglič nicely, took a more conservative approach and just quietly monitored the events somewhat in the background.

As expected, the stage was decided on the final climb, which was somewhat shortened due to the strong wind. Wind gusts reached more than 60 km/h, causing headaches for many cyclists. Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious) violently attacked 4.5 km before the finish line, who already had a 20-second lead over the main group, which stretched considerably in the last kilometers.

But the Italian was not lucky, a good 500 meters before the finish line he was caught by all the favorites for the stage win: his teammate Mikel Landa, Enric Mas (Movistar), Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), also Hugh Carty (EF Education–EasyPost), Wilco Kelderman and Roglič (both Jumbo-Visma). The fight for the victory was fierce, but Roglič took the cream, attacking from the leeward side and gaining a decisive advantage over Ciccone in the last meters.

An exceptional stage victory for the Kisov resident, who secured the leader’s shirt with the victory. He is behind the German before the stage Lennard Kämno (Bora-Hansgrohe) trailed by 6 seconds, now he has a four-second lead over him in the overall standings. The third is Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), trailing by 12 seconds.

The sixth stage of the Paris – Nice Race, which was supposed to connect Tourves with La Colle-sur-Loup, was canceled due to extremely strong winds, the organizers announced in a press release. The joint leadership of the race is in the hands of the Slovenian ace Tadej Pogačar, Jan Tratnik (Jumbo-Visma) and Domen Novak (UAE Team Emirates) also take part in the race.

The organizers initially tried to shorten the stage and postpone it, they waited for the improvement of the weather conditions, but later decided to cancel the stage for the safety of the cyclists. “The wind caused several tree falls in the region today, so the cancellation of the stage today was inevitable.” they wrote down. The race will continue on Saturday with the 7th stage from Nice to the Col de la Couillole.
