Dragan Džajić is the new president of the Football Association of Serbia. At the assembly in Stara Pazova, the delegates confirmed him unanimously, after former Manchester United star Nemanja Vidić withdrew his candidacy the day before the vote.
78 out of a total of 85 delegates attended the assembly, and all of them supported the only candidate.
The 42-year-old Vidić announced a thorough renovation of the association with new professional staff, but eventually withdrew his candidacy: “Unfortunately, I received a message at every step that I will not get this opportunity. The responsibility for solving the problems in the union has now been given to the same team that created them. I am not optimistic. In my opinion, in four years it will be even worse than it is today. “
Upon his election, Džajić highlighted the creation of an environment and conditions for the national team to qualify for next year’s European Championship in Germany as a championship task. According to him, the national team is the mirror of the association’s activities.
“I accepted this challenge because I think that with the experience and knowledge that I have gained from winning 36 club laurels as well as European and world titles, I can help. Together we can raise Serbian football to a higher level and I will do my best. But I don’t have magical dwarves, I don’t even promise you castles and fortresses,” said Džajić and asked for a little patience.
The 76-year-old is one of the giants of Serbian and Yugoslav football, who shone on the left wing at Crvena zvezda.
Otherwise, these were the by-elections of the president, after Slaviš Kokez resigned after two years as president.
