Antonio Conte: ‘We have players who are selfish and don’t do anything important’

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has accused his players of being ‘selfish’ and criticized his club for lacking a winning mentality. After the team relinquished a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with bottom-placed Southampton.

The result temporarily cost Tottenham a chance to move up to third place, further intensifying the battle for persistence involving at least nine teams. Only 4 points separate Crystal Palace in 12th and Southampton in bottom.

“You see wayward players all the time. After James Ward and Prowse equalized in injury time with penalties from James Ward and Prowse, the Italian admitted, “They are used to it. They have something important to say. They don’t want to play under pressure,” he continued.

“There are 11 players on the field, but there are players who are selfish. Some players don’t want to help each other. They don’t have heart,” he recalled at a press conference afterwards.

“There are 10 games left, but someone thinks we can fight. With this spirit, with this attitude, with this comment, what can we fight for? Because? Seventh, eighth, ninth? I’m not used to that kind of position,” said Conte, very upset.

“The club is responsible for the signs… every coach that goes through here is responsible… and the players? Where are the players? In 20 years with this owner they have never won anything Is it because of the manager or the club?

“Everyone has to take responsibility, not just the club, not just the coaches, not just the staff. Players are caught in this situation. Tottenham must change. If you want this to continue, coaches. They can change the director, but a lot of them won’t change, but the situation won’t change,” declared the Italian director before leaving the room.

The result left Tottenham in fourth place with 49 points, two games less than rivals Newcastle (45). So far, Conte’s side have qualified for the Champions League, but another setback could see them play in the Europa League or even fail to reach the European competition standings.

It’s good to remember that recently it was one of his directives that aimed at him in short supply. “We’re out of the biggest club competition. A team can’t play like this without scoring goals. I didn’t understand Conte’s decision to leave me out of the starting squad. He’s a great moment. It was,’ commented Richarlison after being eliminated from the Champions League.
