The 106th Giro is approaching its climax, today the riders have to complete the royal 19th stage with five categorized climbs and the finish at Tre Cime di Lavareda, followed by the mountain time trial at Višarje on Saturday.
Today, the caravan has to overcome as many as 5,400 meters of altitude, and then on Saturday, in the time trial, there is a brutal ascent to Svete Višare.
Among the five climbs today is also Giau (9.9 km/average gradient 9.3%), which with 2236 meters represents the highest point of the 106th Race across Italy (Cima Coppi).
At the end of the day, there is a two-part climb, first to the Treh križev pass (Tre Croci, 7.9 km/7.2%), and then, after a gentler part, the final climb to Lavared. Especially the last four kilometers are steep with an average gradient of 11.7 percent.
In the pink shirt is the British Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), the runner-up Primož Roglič 29 seconds behind. The stage is expected to end shortly after 5 p.m.
