Dutch Red Bull driver Max Verstappen set the fastest time in Saturday’s qualifying session to take pole position at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, ahead of Aston Martin’s Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso. .

For Verstappen, the current double world champion and overall leader this season, this is the fourth of six pole positions in 2023 and the first in his entire career in Monaco.

Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) will start from the second row on Sunday, while Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine) will finish third and fourth in Saturday’s session.

Grid positions are particularly important in Monaco, as the race takes place on a street circuit with narrow roads that make overtaking difficult.

Verstappen is eager for his second victory at the iconic Monaco Grand Prix in 2021.

Last year’s victory in the Principality was a race where Verstappen had to settle for third place, won by his Mexican team-mate at Red Bull, Sergio Perez.

“Czech” Perez was the big loser this Saturday. The Mexican driver, who was second in the World Cup, 14 points behind team-mate Verstappen, crashed into the wall in the first round (Q1) of the qualifying session, damaging his car. They will start from the back on Sunday.
