When reliving the events of Saturday’s decisive stage at the Giro on Svete Višare, we cannot miss the moment when Primož Roglič’s chain came off. While Slovenia was holding its breath, someone was there at the right time who was not wearing the colors of Jumbo Visma.

Možakar gave Roglič some impetus to continue down the extraordinary slope, and a search operation was launched after him. We soon found out that he helped Roglič Mitja Mežnar, with whom they also skied together in the youth national team. After 16 years, they wrote a new story that they will be able to tell their grandchildren.
“My colleague Matjaž Šparavec and I went to Trbiž by bicycle and then to Svete Višare on foot. We concluded that we will encourage Primož where it should not be for spectators. We deviated a little from the path and went into a steep forest. Obviously, we appeared where it was most needed. We were overjoyed, just like all of Slovenia, that everything turned out like this,” Mežnar told Val 202.
Mežnar and Šparavec stood at a distance of a hundred meters. Šparavec was lower, Mežnar higher. “When I saw Primož around the bend with his foot on the ground, I was surprised. I can only imagine what a shock this must have been for him. Fortunately, everything turned out well,Mežnar said.
Many people remember that years ago at the Giro, Roglič was subsequently penalized with the addition of seconds due to a similar push by one of his friends. Fortunately, that was not the case this time. Mežnar instinctively waited for the club mechanic to push Roglič first, then pushed him himself.
“But there is another anecdote in this connection. Shortly before that, we were in contact with Primož’s mother, who told us not to push him. But given the situation, I tried to help completely subconsciously, to get him back on the bike as soon as possible ,” said Mežnar.
In 2007, Mežnar and Roglič, together with Juri Tepeš and Robert Hrgota, won the team title of world youth ski jumping champions.
