After the tragedy at Kusuklatan Stadium on 20 May, the activities of the national football team were paralyzed. On May 30, the El Salvador Football Federation (FESFUT) announced through social networks that the reserve tournament and women’s league were cancelled.
Humberto Sáenz, chairman of the normalization commission, explained the reasons for the decision, following the reaction on social networks of women’s league players, substitutes and other international football players.
Saenz said the alternative was to play the remainder of each competition behind closed doors. “When we sat down again to watch the girls and reserves, we said to them again, ‘Ladies, let’s play, but let’s play behind closed doors.’ We impose the alternative. I couldn’t.”
committee chairMr. n pointed out that the underlying reason why coaches cancel tournaments is economic reasons. “We know there are overhead costs. In fact, all of these are dependent on considerations of the economic nature that led us to make this decision.”
Finally, Saenz commented that they are working with FIFA to create a formal structure that will allow (in the long term) the integration of professional football in the women’s football division. “That strategic plan was put together as we do almost all of these things together with advice from FIFA.”
