I met Jasmina twice. The first time she worked on the Puerto Rican roller coaster. She sat on the fence and tore off my driving ticket. The second time, when she was walking with a shuffling step on the stairs of the block where I lived as a student.
Then almost ten years passed before I met her for the third time and spoke to her for the first time.
We usually follow established paths. We rush automatically, as if traveling through a narrow tunnel created by our preoccupied thoughts, from which we just can’t tear ourselves away. People, trees, birds, buildings, stories pass us by, but we don’t notice them. We miss opportunities for meetings that could enrich us, fill us up, make us happy. Such a life is shallow.
Jasmina, who is now my wife, and I had a meeting with Globoka huša a few days ago. With headphones on, we experienced a unique, deeper experience with the space and time it frames through the audio story of our largest Slovenian cultural and congress center, Cankarjev dom. Within this multifaceted experience, which you can experience by walking, the Roman Emona, mighty beeches and sycamores are caught, planted more than 200 years ago in the former Zois park, which adorns the western part of Cankar’s home, the sounds of a fly flying over the head of one of the workers on a hot summer day in the second half of the 70s of the last century, the tracing of the architect’s pencil, which grandly materialized many ideas, with created something big with an eye for detail. Gallus’s, Linhart’s and Kosovel’s halls are thoughtfully colored in the color of the spirit of the times, which these artists co-created. Almost 8,000 flutes will also play for us ours the largest organ. In this story, we are swept away by the thoughts and sentences of architects, as well as politicians and cultural figures, connected with the construction of this great cultural temple.
This year is Ravnikar’s year. And this management is a beautiful tribute to his creation, which was created with the full measure of subtlety by Irena Pivka and Branko Zorman.
I can’t imagine how different things would have been if I hadn’t spoken to her when I happened to meet Jasmina again. To keep quiet, to look away, to do nothing. As a nation, it is probably hard to imagine ourselves without this house that we call home, Cankar’s home. After this audio guidance, which sharpens the senses, I feel its value all the more. I warmly recommend that you too take a curious walk through the space and time of Cankarjev dom. Curiosity is the joy of knowing.
