At the Race of Spain today, the cyclists ride the longest stage (208 km), which takes the caravan on 10 categorized climbs for a total of 4,361 meters in height. Nevertheless, it is not expected that anything will change significantly at the top of the total.
After 110 kilometers of the stage and half of the categorized slopes, there were escapees (including Remco Evenepoel the highest of the escapees in the total) already six minutes ahead. Leading Jumbo Visma (he has Wilco Kelderman in the breakaway group of 31 riders) controls the position in the main body.
Bees towards total victory
American Sepp Kuss should, barring an accident, defend the overall lead and celebrate his greatest success and first victory in three weeks of racing at Sunday’s Parade of Champions in Madrid. The second place is promising To Jonas Vingegaardand the third Primož Roglič.
The Jumba Visma team will therefore win the first three places, and above all, after the Giro (Roglič) and the Tour (Vingegaard), they will win the third three-week race of the season, which no other team in cycling history has managed to do.
The slopes in the mountains above Madrid
Today, ten categorized climbs await the cyclists on the route from Manzanares El Real to Guadarrama, but none of them will be more challenging than the third category. The slopes will total an enviable 4,361 meters in height, and the cyclists will be more than a thousand meters above sea level throughout the day.
No climb will last much longer than ten minutes, but since the climbs follow one another, there will be no real rest. Perhaps the most difficult is the very last slope, Alto San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 4.6 kilometers long and with an average gradient of 6.6 percent.
The stage, whose profile is compared to the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic and which will in all probability be made more difficult by rainy weather at times, started at 12:02 and will end around 17:30.
