Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) took pole position in this Saturday’s Singapore Grand Prix, but the first two cars of the World Championship, Dutchman Max Verstappen and Mexican Czech Perez (Red Bull), were unexpectedly successful. Due to the loss, we had to start very late. In the second quarter.
Sunday’s race on the Marina Bay street layout will see the Spaniard start ahead of British George Russell (Mercedes) and another Ferrari, Monaco’s Charles Leclerc.
Far behind, Dutchman Max Verstappen, the established world championship leader, was in 11th place and could face multiple penalties for interfering with drivers on the track and in the pit lane. Mexico’s Sergio “Checo” Perez is 13th.
Verstappen and Perez were eliminated early in Saturday’s second qualifying round (Q2) and did not participate in the third and final qualifying round (Q3).
With the top 10 qualifying for Q3, the Dutchman achieved just his 11th time, ahead of Perez’s 13th.
This is the first time since the 2018 Russian Grand Prix that Red Bull will not participate in the final qualifying.
Verstappen started 15th in the second round of this season, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, due to machine trouble.
The first part of qualifying (Q1) was marked by Lance Stroll’s violent run off the track.
On his last high-speed lap in Q1 to secure a spot in the top 15, which is synonymous with a place in Q2, the Canadian crashed hard into the wall at full speed, tearing off much of the left front section of his Aston Martin.
The driver was almost hit by a following McLaren but escaped unharmed, but was taken to a medical center for tests as a precaution.
If doctors say he is fit to compete in Sunday’s Grand Prix, Stroll will start from 20th on the back of the starting grid.
