Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera defeated Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 6:0, 7:6 in the final of the tennis tournament in Ljubljana and looked forward to her first WTA laurel in her career.
The 23-year-old, who is ranked 132nd in the world, made a strong start to the final match, winning the opening eight games.
She led 4:1 in the second set, but the 21-year-old Turkish woman, 177th in the WTA rankings, came back into the match. She equalized at 4:4 and forced an extended game by taking away her serve at 6:5. Bassols Ribera dominated it and won it 7:2.
The match lasted one hour and 22 minutes.
On her way to the title, the Spaniard lost only one set in the opening round. For the prize, she received a good 13,000 euros and 160 points, which in the new ranking will take her to about 110th place in the WTA ranking.
