The former Salvadoran player was hired by Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes in 2003 and went on to play for teams in the same league, including Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas. At the age of 26, he appeared on the European soccer stage for the first time along with Portugal’s Pacos Ferreira. Alvarez also regrets wishing he had played on the “Old Continent” when he was younger.
“I came to Portugal when I was 26 years old and I wanted to come to Europe when I was younger because in Portugal that year I learned a lot about the tactics of the game with the coach and became a better player. “The players are making decisions, on the field,” Alvarez said.
Arturo also confessed that he would have liked to play in a team that competes in the UEFA Champions League. At the time he was able to sign and play in Europe, French teams were playing in the Champions League and UEFA Cup, as were six-time French champions Bordeaux.
“Honestly, in MLS, we had a chance to become champions with San Jose. We had a great team.
