Spain’s new coach Montserrat Tome has announced the squad for the two Nations League matches, but it does not include Jenni Hermoso, who raised a huge dust-up after being kissed on the mouth by former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales.
Tome, 41, included 15 players from the World Cup on the list, although all of them are signatories to the demand for changes at the top of the Spanish federation and national football team. The new coach, who succeeded Jorge Vildo, said she spoke to everyone personally before announcing the list.
Among those called up is two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, as well as her Barcelona teammates Mapa Leon and Patri Guijarro, who did not play at the World Cup due to disagreement with the policy of the Spanish federation or selectors.
Missing from the list is Jenni Hermoso, who told the selector that she didn’t call her because she wanted to protect her. “I’ve worked with her for five years and I know what’s best for her,” Tome said.
“Today, a new era begins for the national team. I believe that all the girls are professionals, that they love the national jersey and that we will continue to write beautiful stories together,” said the new selector.
Spain will play Nations League games against Sweden and Switzerland on September 22 and 26.
