Russia is experiencing setbacks in the east of its neighboring country

After Russian forces withdrew from the strategically important city of Liman in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv would take control of additional territories next week.

“Several Ukrainian flags have flown this week in the Donbas (the Donetsk Basin, which consists of Donetsk and Lugansk regions). There will be more in the next week,” Zelenski assured in his evening address on Saturday.

Shortly before that, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced that its forces were entering the city of Liman and published a video of soldiers with the Ukrainian flag raised. The Russian side has confirmed its withdrawal from the city, which it has maintained control of since spring.

Governor of Luhansk Sergij Gajdaj meanwhile, he called the liberation of Liman in Donetsk one of the key factors for taking control of the lost territory in Lugansk as well.

Zelensky predicted that Russian soldiers will continue to die as long as the president is in power Vladimir Putin. “Until you solve the problem with the one who started it all, who started this senseless war against Ukraine, you will be killed one by one,” he said, calling the war a historical mistake of Russia.

Russia has suffered a series of military setbacks in recent weeks in eastern and southern Ukraine, where Ukrainian forces are waging a violent counter-offensive.

Following referendums not recognized by the international community, Russia annexed four Ukrainian provinces – Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson – on Friday, amid sharp condemnation from the world, and now considers them Russian territory. In 2014, it already annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.

Berlin promised a quick delivery of air defense

Meanwhile, Ukraine was unexpectedly visited by the German Minister of Defense Christine Lambrecht, who met with a Ukrainian colleague in the southern port city of Odesa Oleksiy Reznikov. She promised that Germany would deliver a state-of-the-art air defense system to Ukraine.

The first unit of the already announced state-of-the-art Iris-T SLM air defense system should be delivered within a few days, reports the German news agency DPA.

Ukraine should first receive the four aforementioned defense systems worth 140 million euros each, which are intended to protect major cities, especially against drone attacks.

The minister, as she told German television ARD on Saturday evening, experienced firsthand how Ukraine suffers while its population is targeted by missiles and drones.

During the visit, she had to take shelter twice due to an air raid alarm, the first time during talks with Reznikov on Saturday afternoon, and the second time at night, while spending the night in a hotel.

It was her first visit to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion at the end of February. German chancellor Olaf Scholz the foreign minister visited Kyiv in June Annalena Baerbock however, she has already visited the Ukrainian capital twice in the past seven months, most recently in mid-September.

The IAEA calls for the release of the general director of Zaporozhye

Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi called for the release of the general director of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is under Russian occupation. Igor Murašov was captured by Russian forces on Friday.

His detention poses a threat to safety and security, the IAEA warns. The agency is working to clarify the circumstances that have “very important influence” on the detained director and nuclear safety in the power plant.

Next week, Grossi is expected to discuss the establishment of a security zone around the Zaporozhye power plant in Moscow and Kiev.

Confusion in Russia about mobilization

It’s been a week and a half since the announcement “partial mobilizations” in Russia, and there are reports of confusion in this area from the country. People who are unfit for service are supposed to be conscripted into the army. Among them are pensioners, the disabled and those who have not completed military training, reports the German portal Deutsche Welle (DW).

DW has been in contact with some in Russia who were wrongly drafted into the army. Among them is 39-year-old Igor (the name is fictitious for security reasons), a reservist sergeant who was called up, although according to the Ministry of Defense regulations, people with this rank over the age of 35 should not be called up as part of partial mobilization. Igor was still drafted along with about 120 other men, all of whom are too old to serve, DW reports. Igor’s wife said that the conscripts also did not undergo the medical examination required by law.

Meanwhile, several governors of Russian provinces have admitted that recruiting offices made mistakes when conscripting reservists. They promised to correct the mistakes and send home all those drafted by mistake.
