General elections are taking place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Attempted electoral fraud in the village of Hozići.

The first partial, unofficial results should be known around midnight

General elections are held in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition to the three members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, around 3.36 million voters choose, among other things, members of the lower house of the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the parliaments of both entities.

President of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) Suad Arnautovic told a midday press conference that most of the country’s 5,900 polling stations opened at 7 a.m. At a small number of polling stations there were delays of no more than half an hour, which were caused by technical problems that were quickly resolved, he explained, according to the Croatian news agency Hina.

The only serious attempt at electoral fraud was confirmed at the polling station in the village of Hozići near Bosanski Nové. Someone brought there 350 pre-filled ballots for all levels of government, which caused the election board to be dismissed. Based on the decision of the Chief Prosecutor of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milanka Kajganić five committee members were arrested.

By 11 a.m., 14 percent of the slightly more than 3.3 million eligible voters had voted. “This is three percent more than in the 2018 election,” said Arnautović, adding that the Central Election Commission was satisfied with the turnout.

A close fight between Bosniaks is expected in the elections for members of the BiH presidency Bakir Izetbegović and Denis Bećirović and between the two Croatian candidates Željko Komšić and Borjana Kristo.

Head of the Croatian Democratic Community (HDZ) in BiH-in Dragan Čović said in Mostar that he expects a convincing victory for his party and the coalition of parties that joined HDZ, as well as the victory of Borjana Krišta.

Dodik is not running for a member of the presidency

She is considered a favorite among the Serbian representatives Željka Cvijanović. Former Serbian member of the presidency Milorad Dodik is not competing for this position, but is running for president of the Republika Srpska.

Voters also elect members of the lower house of the BiH parliament, the lower house of the Bosniak-Croat Federation of BiH parliament, the Republika Srpska parliament, the president and vice-president of the latter, and members of the assemblies of the ten cantons of the federation.

According to analysts’ expectations, the three largest parties of the constituent nations will once again receive the most votes at all levels of government.

The elections are taking place at a time of great political tension. International envoys and a high representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt as the main problem they emphasize the increasingly loud calls for the division of the country coming from the ranks of the Bosnian Serbs and the failure to implement the urgently needed reforms that would bring the country closer to EU membership.

In the country, however, they did not reach an agreement on changes to the electoral legislation, which would, among other things, ensure the equal representation of all three entities in the institutions, and it is also requested by the European Court of Human Rights, he reported Boštjan Anžin for Radio Slovenia.
