According to Israeli police, eight people were killed in a shooting outside a synagogue on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The attack took place in the occupied eastern part of the city a day after a deadly Israeli raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank.
The data on the number of victims is different for now. Israel’s foreign ministry said seven people were killed and 10 wounded, while Israeli emergency services confirmed that five people had died and five others were injured, including a 70-year-old woman. Some of the wounded are in critical condition.
The Israeli police described the attack as “terrorist”, she also announced that the shooter was shot and killed while trying to flee the scene. According to the police, the shooter was a resident of East Jerusalem. He was supposed to shoot a gun.
The attack took place in the illegal Israeli settlement of Neve Ya’akov in occupied East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed in violation of international law after the occupation in 1967.
Al Jazeera reports that a car allegedly stopped in front of the synagogue, from which the gunman got out and started shooting.
The attack followed Thursday’s deadly Israeli raid on a refugee camp in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, in which occupation forces killed nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman.
After the raid, rockets were fired from Gaza over Israel, which then carried out airstrikes in the occupied part of Palestine.
So far, no Palestinian movement has claimed responsibility for tonight’s attack. Hamas, however, announced that it was “the operation is a response to the crime committed by the occupying forces in Jenin and a natural response to the criminal acts of the occupier”.
The Islamic Jihad movement welcomed the attack but did not claim responsibility for it.
The number of Palestinians killed in Israeli raids in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the beginning of the year has risen to 29, including five children. More than 170 Palestinians, many of them civilians, were killed in Israeli raids last year. Last year, Israel also killed around 50 people in occupied Gaza.
