The small-town Texas police chief said Saturday that three American women who went to sell clothing at a market in Mexico have been missing for more than two weeks.

Marina Pérez Rios, 48, her sister Maritza Trinidad, 47, and friend Dora Alicia Cervantes Saenz, 53, crossed the border into Mexico on February 24.

The Texas women intended to go to the northeastern Mexican city of Montemorelos to sell clothes at a market, Roel Bermere, the police chief for the town of Penitas, Texas, confirmed to AFP.

A few days after she disappeared, the husband of one of them reported her disappearance to the Penitas police near the border. So far, the reason for his disappearance is unknown.

“I don’t know if they got there,” Nuevo Leon’s Montemorelos told Roel Bermere. The city is about a three-hour drive from the US border. The Federal Police (FBI) were notified, Barmere said.

On Monday, four Americans were kidnapped and two of them killed in Matamoros, also in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas. They were shot and kidnapped by militants after crossing the border to receive treatment in Mexico, a popular destination for medical tourism.

On Friday, Mexican authorities announced the arrest of five people suspected of being involved in her abduction.
