Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement during the negotiations on the renewal of the agreement on the export of grain from the Black Sea, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed. The existing agreement would expire on Sunday.
Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov later announced that the agreement was extended by 120 days. He thanked the United Nations and Turkey for implementing the agreement. Before the restoration, Russia called for an extension of only 60 days.
In Canakkale, western Turkey, where he attended the opening ceremony of the infrastructure project, Erdogan thanked Ukraine, Russia and the United Nations for their efforts in reaching the agreement, which he said was key to the stability of food supplies around the world.
The President of Turkey also explained that, as part of the agreement, 800 ships have exported 25 million tons of grain from Black Sea ports so far. The agreement also helped lower grain prices on global markets.
The Black Sea initiative for the export of grain was concluded by Russia and Ukraine last July with the intervention of the United Nations and Turkey, thereby releasing the blockade of the Black Sea ports that Russia occupied at the beginning of the invasion.
