Pope Francis has called for support for water conservation by better managing the planet’s water resources, which are “wasted”, “shortage” and “reasons for war”.

“I wish you all the best in your work” and “I hope this important event will accelerate initiatives in favor of the water-scarce” of the conference on the subject, being held at United Nations Headquarters in New York. It’s a resource,” he proclaimed in the general audience.

“Water cannot be a waste, abuse or cause of war, but it must be protected for us and future generations,” he added.

The United Nations Conference on Water is an unprecedented event in almost half a century, with some 6,500 participants, including 100 ministers and 12 heads of state and governments.

In a report issued on that occasion, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres criticized the current model of consumption, which “seeks to deplete, drop by drop, the source of human life.”

The Pope started his appeal because Wednesday is also World Water Day, citing the San Francisco Creature Hymn, which defines water as a “very humble, worthy and chaste” element.
