The members have so far approved 5.6 billion euros as part of the European peace instrument for the co-financing of arms supplies to Ukraine, and they are currently negotiating an additional 500 million euros. Borrell hopes that an agreement on additional funds, which Hungary opposes, will be reached this week.
According to him, the vast majority of ministers also supported raising the upper limit of this instrument, to which countries contribute directly and which is also intended to help other countries around the world, by 3.5 billion euros. Currently, the upper limit of funds for the period 2021-2027 is slightly less than eight billion euros.
“These additional funds will not only be used for Ukraine, but also for addressing challenges elsewhere in the world,” Borrell pointed out.
He also said that the EU and its members have so far allocated 65 billion euros for aid to Ukraine and its citizens in the humanitarian, financial, economic and military fields, of which around 10 billion are military aid.
The European Commission has paid an additional 1.5 billion euros in aid to Ukraine
