Dutch police said on Saturday that more than 1,500 people, including actresses from the “Game of Thrones” series, had been arrested during actions on The Hague’s highways by environmental group Extinction Rebellion.
In the afternoon, militants blocked the A12 highway in the city center in protest against state subsidies for fossil fuels.
“A total of 1,579 people have been arrested, 40 of whom will be charged,” police said in a statement.
A statement said one of the militants bit the arrested police officer.
Among those detained is actress Carice van Houten, 46, who played the priestess Melisandre in the “Game of Thrones” series.
The Dutch news agency ANP, citing a representative for Van Houten, did not say whether he was one of the demonstrators to be prosecuted, but reported that he had already been released and returned to his home.
In a video posted to his Instagram account, Van Houten, wearing a red poncho, is seen being sprayed with water from police cannons.
This Saturday’s action will be the seventh action organized by Extinction Rebellion on that section of the Hague motorway.
