Hunter Biden indicted for gun purchase

US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden has been indicted on charges of violating the Firearms Act by providing false information when purchasing a gun and intentionally concealing his drug addiction.

Indictment against To Hunter Biden was expected, as the agreement with the prosecutor’s office failed before that.

The 53-year-old is accused of making a false statement when purchasing a weapon, making false statements to a seller and possessing a weapon despite drug addiction. He faces up to ten years in prison, but the prosecutor’s office has already announced that in similar cases they usually give much lower sentences.

Hunter Biden revealed his long-term drug addiction himself in a book published in 2021. He has long been under the scrutiny of the American judiciary. Among other things, he is being investigated for possible tax crimes. In June, however, the Delaware prosecutor’s office finally announced formal charges against the president’s son. This was a violation of the Weapons Act. He was also accused of not paying income tax on time in 2017 and 2018.

Prosecutors initially said there would be no trial over the deal with Hunter Biden, but the deal fell through in July.

In mid-August, he is then the US Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special investigator in the case David Weisswho had already led the investigation and was thus given additional powers.

In response to the indictment, Hunter Biden’s lawyers asserted that “the evidence hasn’t changed in the last six weeks” and that said indictment was part of a deal with the prosecution, so Hunter Biden should not be indicted. In addition, the legal team also refers to the fact that it is “several federal courts have recently found this statute unconstitutional”and maintains that Hunter Biden did not break the law.

The investigation and possible trial against the president’s son could also have an impact on the election campaign. Joe Biden plans to run again next year for the highest position in the country. Republicans in the House of Representatives have even launched an investigation for constitutional impeachment against US President Joe Biden due to his alleged involvement in his son’s controversial dealings.
