In the early hours of Friday morning, Mexican federal and state authorities found 350 dehydrated men, women and children, mostly from Guatemala, huddled in boxes in a trailer in the state of Veracruz.
Authorities stopped the trailer driver in an area located between the cities of Cordoba and Coatzacoalcos on Mexico’s eastern coast, the National Migration Institute (INM) reported in a statement.
Thanks to a device equipped with gamma rays, the agents managed to detect the presence of a person inside the container. As they approached, they heard screams and bangs at the rear of the trailer, at which point they intervened and opened the box.
INM officials said 340 of the migrants were Guatemalan, six Ecuadorian, three from Honduras and one from El Salvador. Authorities have not determined whether his stay in Mexico is legal.
The Mexican Attorney General’s Office seized the trailer and the driver was also taken into custody.
