Five members of a Greek rescue team died in a road accident shortly after arriving in Libya to take part in post-flood search operations, according to a new report released by Greek authorities on Monday.
Three Libyan family members in the other car were also killed in the collision, and two others were seriously injured, said Othman Abdeljalil, the eastern Libyan health minister.
In a Facebook message on Monday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis regretted the “tragic” accident, which left “five members of the Greek delegation dead.”
“Of the five bodies, three are members of the Greek military and two are translators from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs (…), and will be repatriated to Athens on Monday.”
This was announced in a statement by the Greek General Staff.
Fourteen other members of the team were also injured.
The same source said three of the Greek military casualties were Greek nationals.
At the initial assessment, the Greek General Staff reported three people dead and two missing. The Libyan Minister reported that four members of the team were killed.
The accident occurred as the 19-member Greek team was heading to Derna, one of the worst-hit cities, 300 kilometers east of Benghazi.
