Despite everything, the average basket of basic foodstuffs, the prices of which are monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture, was ten percent less in the seventh census at six retailers in Slovenia than in the first census.

As announced today by the Ministry of Agriculture, the average basket of basic foodstuffs rose in price by 2.90 euros compared to the sixth census. The biggest increase at the retailer reached just under 12 percent, while at one retailer the value of the cheapest shopping basket decreased by 0.81 percent.

The cheapest basket this time was in Tuš (43.09 euros), and the most expensive in Mercator (47 euros). The second cheapest basket was Eurospin (44.06 euros), followed by Hofer (45.18 euros), Lidl (45.66 euros) and Spar (45.79 euros).

When comparing the prices of the retailers’ baskets with the promotional prices, the average price of the promotional basket is 43.88 euros, which is 2.55 euros more than in the sixth census. The cheapest basket with promotional prices costs 39.23 euros, which is 5.95 euros less than a basket with regular prices from the same retailer.

Increase in the price of bread, pork and chicken meat, apples, cheese…

The largest price ranges between the most expensive and the cheapest product in individual product categories within the offer of an individual retailer can be found in bread. There are also large price ranges in the categories of pasta, apples and flour, while the smallest price ranges are in the categories of eggs, butter, milk and sugar.

In the last two weeks, the price of pork (+10.17 percent) rose the most, followed by bread (+7.17 percent), apples (+4.44 percent), cheese (+4.40 percent), chicken meat ( +3.89 percent), eggs (+0.94 percent) and pasta (+0.47 percent).

When analyzing the average prices of individual products from the first census until today, seven products have become cheaper. The prices for pork meat decreased the most (-22.77 percent), followed by cheese (-20.57 percent), potatoes (-10.91 percent), flour (-8.96 percent), beef (-7, 76 percent) and pasta (-3.59 percent). On the other hand, sugar (+47.52 percent) and apples (+11.90 percent) rose in price the most.

Separate fruit and vegetable basket

In the seventh census, the fruit and vegetable basket, which contains tangerines, lemons, apples, frozen forest fruits, bananas, walnuts, cabbage, sauerkraut, potatoes, carrots and frozen peas, was analyzed separately for the second time. They also list lettuce and cauliflower, but these two products were excluded from the analysis due to different labeling by retailers (per kilogram or per piece).

The average value of a basket of fruit and vegetables in the seventh census was 32.98 euros, which is two percent more than in the previous census. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive fruit and vegetable basket reached 10.63 euros. The average value of the cheapest fruit and vegetable basket with promotional prices is 32.01 euros, which is just under three percent less than the average value of the basket with regular prices.

According to the Ministry, the offer of fruit and vegetables at six merchants is large. An average of 43 different products are available in the selected categories. The retailer with the widest range offers 66 different products from selected fruit and vegetable categories, while the retailer with the smallest range offers 22.
