Almost a third of respondents shop online more often than last year

Payments via mobile applications are becoming more and more popular among Slovenians, and compared to 2022, they have increased by three times, according to the latest Masterindex survey by Mastercard Slovenia.

In a survey of 1,006 people, the largest increase was recorded in payments through mobile applications. They have increased by three times and are now used by five percent of respondents, Mastercard Slovenia explained in a press release.

Last year, 54 percent of respondents used a mobile phone to confirm online purchases. In shops and gas stations, half of the respondents paid with a mobile phone, while in restaurants and bars, just under a third (31 percent) paid.

An increasing number of Slovenians use their mobile phones to buy tickets for cultural or sporting events, 25 percent of them did so this year, and 18 percent the year before, pointed out at Mastercard.

Simplicity, the ability to track expenses and a user-friendly experience are no longer the only key factors when choosing a mobile payment app. Almost 80 percent of respondents expect secure payment with authentication, which is significantly more than other features that lose importance over time.

More and more online purchases

Online shopping has also become increasingly popular. Almost 30 percent of respondents shop online more often than a year ago. The share of those who do not decide to buy online at all amounted to four percent this year, while in 2019 this share was eight percent. A 20% increase.

40 percent of respondents shop more often in Slovenian online stores, while a good third shop equally often in Slovenian and foreign online stores. Compared to last year, the share of purchases in foreign online stores increased to almost a quarter of all online customers.

Payment cards for ever smaller amounts

More than 85 percent of Slovenians regularly use payment cards when paying online and in physical stores, and the survey also showed a greater willingness to pay smaller amounts with a card. In a given situation, more than 70 percent of respondents would be willing to pay an amount of five euros or less with a payment card, while a tenth of them would do so for an amount between six and ten euros.

In the next six months, 72 percent of respondents plan to travel abroad. Croatia remains the most popular destination, but there is a noticeable downward trend in the number of visitors compared to previous years. This year, 59 percent of the respondents intend to travel to Croatia, while last year this share was 76 percent.

When traveling, the majority of respondents still prefer to pay with cash (41 percent), while 13 percent use card payments exclusively.
