Luck in the Pogačar accident with the last 3 km rule

The second stage of the 109th Tour of France did not bring the expected windy drama, but a sprint of the main body. The strongest was Fabio Jakobsen, who narrowly beat Wout van Aert for a great personal victory. As a consolation, the Belgian took the yellow shirt of the leader.

A big and emotional victory for Fabio Jakobsenwho almost died two years ago in an accident at the end of the sprint in the Race across Poland, where the Dutchman was sent into the fences and into a life-threatening situation by his compatriot Dylan Groenewegen.

Fabio Jakobsen was half a lap faster than Wout van Aert, and third place in stage 2 was won by Mads Pedersen. According to the forecasts, the aforementioned trio will also fight fiercely for the green shirt or. the title of the best sprinter at the Tour 2022. Photo: AP

“Unbelievable, as we say in French. It’s been a long process for me, step by step. A lot of people have helped me along the way. I want to let them know that it was all worth it. I’m happy that I’m still enjoying cycling and racing and that luckily I can still win,” was moved by Jakobsen, who after severe injuries and a series of surgeries and facial reconstruction last year already made a triumphant return to racing.

With his first victory on the Tour, the now 25-year-old Dutchman confirmed his status as the current best sprinter, this is his 11th victory this year! The second day of the 2022 Tour and the second consecutive victory of the Belgian team QuickStep Alpha Vinyl, which lost the yellow shirt.

Jumbo Visma already with a yellow shirt

Winner of the opening time trial Yves Lampaert got involved in a fall at the start of the notorious 18km Storebælt Bridge, returned to the main body and did his job in the sprint train for Jakobsen’s win. But because he was Wout van Aert second again to win by six seconds, the early favorite for the final green jersey has now taken over the leader’s jersey in the Tour de France. Van Aert has accomplished one of his career goals, and now Jumbo Vismo has the responsibility of overseeing the race.

Pogačar and Roglič happily carried away in the last three kilometers

He was lucky in the accident Tadej Pogačar, who punctured his front tire twice in the last three kilometers, costing him the winner’s time, as is the rule in sprint stages, if there is a breakdown or fall at the end of the stages. After the end of the stage, it was revealed that he injured the knuckles on his left hand while retreating into the fence.

“There were complications in the last three kilometers. I backed into the fence and hit my hand against it and rubbed my knuckles. It’s a bit sore at the moment, but I got to the finish line somehow safely with two defects,” the two-time winner of the Tour de France told RTV Slovenia, pointing to the bloodied knuckles of his left hand.

A smile of happiness also arrived Primož Rogličwho was the very last cyclist to escape the crash, which involved a bunch of cyclists, during a massive fall at the transition from the highway to the end of the stage.

“In the end, it was the most relaxed right on the bridge. Nervous, as befits the Tour. The team worked great and we were at the front all the time and we just enjoyed this support,” was satisfied after the end of the second day in Denmark Zasava eagle.

Nothing from the wind blowing the bulk

202.2 km long 2nd stage from Roskilde to Nyborg she promised that the wind would cause the main body to break up into groups (echelons), but nothing came of it. There was some drama cycling over the infamous 18km Storebælt Bridge, where a breakdown first stopped Rigobert Uran, then he fell to the yellow-clad Lampaert, but both caught the bulk. The wind in the chest and the tactics of the sprint teams were then also to blame for the complication within the last three kilometers, when a massive fall followed.

Fear had big eyes on Storebæltsbroen, but the wind in his chest ensured that there was no breaking into small groups at the end. Photo: Reuters

But due to the three-kilometer rule, this has no effect on the overall classification, where van Aert is now leading by just one second ahead of Lampaert, while Tadej Pogačar is now eight seconds behind the Belgian, and Roglič is 17 seconds behind.

Cort’s first polka dot shirt

The first half of the 2nd stage was marked by three mountain objectives of the lowest fourth category. The longest is the last one on the Cote de Karup (83 masl; 1.3 km, average gradient 5.8 percent). All three were won by the Dane Magnus Cort Nielsen, making the American EF Education EasyPost team rider the first holder of the polka dot jersey for the best hillclimber. 31 km before the finish line, the last fugitive was caught Sven Erik Bystrøm. With this, the Norwegian earned the title of the most fighting rider of the 2nd stage.
