The fourth day of the World Championships in Athletics brought 4 final decisions. American Laulauga Tausaga (discus), Kenyan Faith Kipyegon (1500 m), Italian Gianmarco Tamberi (height) and Moroccan Soufiane El Bakali (3000 m steeplechase) became world champions.
The surprise of the day was prepared by Tausaga. At the halfway point of the final in the discus throw, she was only sixth with a personal record of 65.56. In the fifth series, she then threw the tool almost four meters more than her best result and celebrated with 69.49. Second was her compatriot, Olympic champion from Tokyo and first favorite Valarie Allman (68.61), and third was defending champion from China Feng Bin (68.20).
Nika Glojnarič expected more
The only Slovenian representative on the fourth day, Nika Glojnarič, was eliminated in the qualifications of the 100 m hurdles. Glojnarič took eighth place in her group with a time of 13.13. She was 21 hundredths behind her personal record. In the group of the 22-year-old Slovenian athlete and a debutante at major member competitions, there was also Nigerian Tobi Amusan, who won gold at the WC in Eugene last year with a world record (12.12).
“I expected a better time, even in the warm-up, and I felt good before the match. I’m a little disappointed, but the girls were very fast this time and I’m missing several results under 13 seconds. I’ve had two so far, but a tied personal best would take me to the semi-finals. This is a new experience and an incentive to move forward. I want to qualify for the indoor WC in March next year, I already have the standard for the EP in Rome, and the goal is also to appear at the Olympic Games in Paris.said Glojnarič.
