At the US Open in New York, the dream final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic is very close. The Serb eliminated the surprising semi-finalist Ben Shelton with 6:3, 6:2 and 7:6, and Daniil Medvedev is waiting for the Spaniard in the evening schedule.

On Sunday at 10:00 p.m., the Serb will be chasing his 24th Grand Slam title. He reached the finals for the tenth time at Flushing Meadows (tying Bill Tilden’s record), lifting the trophy in 2011, 2015 and 2018.

The Serb shone especially when he hit the first serve, after which he won as much as 84 percent of the points. He brilliantly returned strong forehands from Shelton, winning 45 of 102 points when the American served.

Djokovic brilliantly returned strong servesIn the first set, Shelton lost his serve in the sixth game, Đoković perfectly returned the American’s strong opening shots and won four chances to win the first set in the eighth game. He didn’t cash in on them, then took advantage of a fifth chance in the ninth game.

Shelton was under a lot of pressure on his serve almost every game. longer exchanges from the baseline were won by Đoković, who won as many as five games in a row and led 2:0 in sets.

Shelton woke up too lateWhen the American lost his serve in the opening game of the third set, it seemed that the first semi-final would be over quickly. In the eighth game, Djokovic lost his serve for the first time in the match. He quickly recovered and served again in the 12th game to win. He had a closing ball, but Shelton saved it to force overtime. The Serb rallied at the decisive moment, took a 5:1 lead at the change of sides and kept the lead until the end (7:4). The settlement lasted two hours and 41 minutes.

The 36-year-old Djokovic reached the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in one season for the third time in his career. In 2015, he only lost at Roland Garros to Stan Wawrinka, and two years ago, Medvedev in New York prevented him from winning the calendar grand slam. This year he won Melbourne and Roland Garros, but Alcaraz was better in the epic Wimbledon final.

Djokovic: The most difficult match awaits me in the finalBecause of such confrontations, I train every day and get up early in the morning. It was not easy to play against the Americans in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. This time it was very challenging in the third set when the spectators were carrying Shelton. I have already achieved a lot, but I am still very motivated in Grand Slam tournaments. Discipline is everything. It is a combination of will and a clear vision of what you want to achieve in the short and long term. I’ve been blessed to play this long, but I still feel like I have something to offer the sport. The most difficult match awaits me in the final. Medvedev beat me in the final two years ago, he is playing the best tennis in this tournament. Alcaraz has made incredible progress over the past year,” said Djokovic, who won 87 out of 100 matches in New York.

The 20-year-old Shelton is the youngest American semi-finalist at a domestic Grand Slam in 30 years. On Monday, he will be among the top 20 players in the world for the first time in his career. He was eliminated in the 1st round in New York last year, when he was ranked 165th in the ATP rankings.
