Thailand was the first country in Southeast Asia to remove marijuana from the list of banned narcotics, meaning people can now grow it at home and sell it. But recreational enjoyment in the form of smoking still remains prohibited.

The government hopes the development of the local marijuana trade will boost agriculture and tourism, and the authorities will even distribute a million marijuana seeds to citizens, the BBC reports.

Marijuana use will be allowed in drinks and food. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Anutin Charnvirakul posted a dish prepared with marijuana on Facebook, stressing that it must contain less than 0.2 percent of the psychoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Households can now grow up to six marijuana plants at home if they are pre-registered with the authorities, and businesses can grow marijuana with the appropriate permit.

Clinics across the country are more free to offer marijuana as a form of treatment. In 2018, Thailand was the first Asian country to legalize the medical use of marijuana.

But smoking marijuana remains banned. Authorities warn against smoking in public, saying it is an annoying act and the perpetrators are threatened with arrest.

The government, meanwhile, says it intends to release about 4,000 inmates convicted of marijuana-related offenses.

Proponents of marijuana use say the rules on marijuana use could be gradually relaxed in the coming years.
