Accounts court accuses 10 mayors of misusing funds

Between May 2018 and April 2021, at least 10 city governments embezzled funds and committed six more crimes, according to audits conducted by the Court of Accounts of the Republic (CCR).

The indicted crimes correspond to embezzlement, arbitrary acts, embezzlement, retention of labor quotas, administrative fraud, gross misrepresentation, perverted ideological documentary and breach of duty, retention of labor and tax accounts.

CCR has filed notices against 10 communes that would have committed about 7 crimes against the administration during the previous municipality period.

Funds come from the amount allocated to deal with the pandemic ($3,307,036.46 million), the Fund for Economic and Social Development (FODES) ($2,697,473.04 million), and the Fund for Social Investment for Rural Development (FISDL) ($6,521.98). , resulting in $9,573,569.64 million from loans. ($2,831,000 million), own fund ($711,782.28), municipal project ($19,755.88).

Carlos Quinteros, CCR’s head of legal affairs, said an audit conducted by CCR revealed financial irregularities in the mayor’s office.

Quinteros did not provide details of the communes surveyed, but said six corresponded to the western zone, two to the central zone, one to the semi-central zone and one to the eastern zone. The court turned over the documentary evidence found during the audit to the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR).
